Here's a letter from Ted Kennedy to Mrs. Mary F. McGrail. It is dated August 29, 1969, and appears to be a "thank you" note for some letter she had sent him in the wake of the infamous "Chappaquiddick" incident. As most people know by now, Kennedy didn't report an accident on the bridge leading from Martha's Vineyard to Chappaquiddick, and the young woman in the car with him, Mary Jo Kopechne, died. Personally, I, James McGrail, was a great admirer of the Kennedys, but this event soured me on Ted. An ordinary man would probably have gotten a DUI for this, not to mention manslaughter.
